The Witches Are Calling

Sharing an image today from some vintage Hallmark Halloween bridge tally cards I found at a thrift shop:
And also, a little song from a vintage songbook:
Watch out - the witches are calling - yoo hoo! Yoo hoo!

I learned this song in like the first grade. I used to live in southern Texas and I still remember it 44 years later.

Our first grade teacher Mrs. Newton played this song on the piano and the class sang along with it for Halloween 1970, At Independence Elementary School. In Independence Oregon. rnmelheim@gmail.com

I, too, am from South Texas, and we also sang this song in music class in elementary school! I never thought I'd find it, but because of the upcoming holidays, I looked it up today. Was I surprised when I found it on your site (which is great, by the way!). Anyone remember, 'A Turkey Sat on a Backyard Fence'? We sang it back then, too! My grandkids laughed when I sang them to them!

This "vintage" boy loved this song when I was a kid. Do you have any info on the songbook? I'd love to find a copy on eBay or somewhere!

I used to sing this song every Halloween in Northeastern PA. It was local custom that you had to sing a song to get your “treat” at each front door as you were “trick or treating”. Curious, where you grew up, did you need to sing at each from door to get your treat? Also, I could not find an audio or video of anyone performing this song. Does anyone have a link to a performance?

I would love to tell you about this little Halloween song. When my sis, brother and I were kids, my Mom taught us this little song and she also made our costumes. When we went trick or treating, we would sing this song and ppl thought we were cute, asked us to sing again and gave us more candy. It was lots of fun to think we were such successful performers and I think it delighted our Mom, too. This was back in the days when kids got homemade popcorn balls, cookies and candy. It is such a sweet memory and the reason Halloween is still my fav holiday.

Like others, I used to sing this song every Halloween in NE PA when I went trick or treating. There was another song I used to sing - has anyone heard it?

Lori's in the cellar
Glory, can't you smell her?
She's mixing up a batch of cookies are her greasy stove
Her eyes are full of matter
That keeps running in the batter
And the (Large sniff here) keeps running from her nose.
From her nose, from her nose
And the (large sniff here) keeps running from her nose.
